œABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM

In recent years, the development of biotechnology and biochemical engineering is very fast. Biochemical engineers are anticipated to play a more and more important role in the advancement of biotechnology and development of bio-related industries including pharmaceutical, food, fermentation, and environmental protection sections. In order to provide a forum for exchanging up-to-date research results, discussing common research interests, exploring potential scientific cooperation, and improving friendship among active scientists from China and other countries (regions), an international symposium on ÒBioprocess and Biomolecular EngineeringÓ is planned after discussion with our domestic and international colleagues.

We welcome senior experts, young researchers, and excellent graduate students in the fields of biotechnology and bioengineering to participate in this event at the East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST). As the participant number is limited, we encourage an early submission of high quality papers to this symposium.

œSPONSOR (TENTATIVE)

National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)

œORGANIZING COMMITTEE

The symposium will be organized by the State Key Laboratory of Bioreactor Engineering in cooperation with domestic institutes. The local organizing committee consists of the following young academic leaders in biotechnology/biochemical engineering from distinguished institutes.

œTECHNICAL PROGRAM

All the presentations will be run in oral sessions. The topics will reflect the latest development and emerging areas in biochemical engineering science and applied biotechnology.

A) Genetic and Protein Engineering, Proteomics, Genomics, Bioinformatics;
B) Metabolic Engineering and Pathway Regulation;
C) Animal and Plant Cell Culture, Marine Bioprocess Engineering;
D) Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering;
E) Biocatalysis and Chiral bio-technology;
F) Fermentation Technology and Process Integration;
G) Bioprocess Control and Bioproducts Optimization;
H) Bioseparation and Downstream Engineering;
I) Environmental Biotechnology and Clean Production.

The invited speakers include world experts - Wei-Shou Hu, Tadayuki Imanaka, Thomas Scheper, Daniel I.C. Wang, Henry Y. Wang, and Toshiomi Yoshida. Their lectures will focus on genomics cell culture engineering, metabolic engineering, bio-molecular engineering and protein engineering, ecological process engineering, intelligent downstream technology, protein expression systems, challenges in fermentation technology and cell culture technology, biopharmaceutical engineering, bioprocess engineering and knowledge-engineering approaches, and cell processing engineering for medical care application.

œSUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS

All interested people are requested to submit a registration form and an extended abstract with 600-800 words for presentation at the conference to one of the organizing members (E-mail: jjzhong@ecust.edu.cn; fax: (+86-21)-6425-3904; phone: (+86-21)-6425-2091). The authors are advised to only indicate until their city/prefecture/province name with the postal code in their address. Inclusion of email address and fax number is also required for quick communication.

All accepted abstracts will be published in the symposium proceedings, which will be available at registration. Authors should submit their abstracts via email attachment (in Microsoft Word file) NOT later than Apr. 10th, 2003. It is determined that one applicant can only have one oral talk. The organizers encourage the participation by graduate students, but each laboratory is limited to recommend only one student due to the limitation of total participants. We hope to ensure a well-interacted symposium for all the speakers.

The abstract format:
Typewritten on A4 paper with margins of top (2.5 cm), bottom (5 cm), left (3 cm) and right (4 cm).
Font: Times New Roman;
Title: bold and centered (14pt);
Authors and affiliation: 11pt, with the presenting author indicated by a superscript asterisk;
Text: 11pt, single spaced and fully justified.

œATTENDANCE

The symposium will be limited to 70 attendees.

œACCOMMODATION

Accommodation will be available at Chen-Yuan guesthouse of ECUST.

œCONFERENCE FEES

The conference fees for participants include registration, admission to all conference sessions, accommodation, a welcome reception, a farewell dinner, coffee breaks, and a set of proceedings.
